Dc-3 Dakota Fly-in Aviodrome 2006

Today I heard the tragic news that the Aviodrome filed for bankruptcy. Especially for the people who work for the organisation it is very sad certainly in these uncertain times. I wish the staff a lot of strength.
As a regular visitor, it is also a real loss. I often take a look in this unique museum and especially in the (aviation) events. I’ve already wrote about some of these events of the Aviodrome before, today I wanted to add the Dakota Fly-in of 2006.

Early birds Lelystad Airport

The past year several Dutch planes where “grounded due to regulations and technical difficulty’s. Two samples are the B-25 Mitchell and Catalina. Gladly organisations like the Early Birds restore and revisit old aircraft! For the past years they worked on the ” Trusty Rusty” P-51 and the (less famous) Nord 1101 Noralpha ( based on the Messerschmitt Bf 108 design) Which can be airborne next year! (if everything turns out positive)

A few weeks ago I visited this foundation due to a photo assignment for the Aviodrome. The atmosphere in the hangar is really amazing and the foundation has a wonderful collection of aircraft. The foundation had its origins 37 years ago with the reconstruction of several rotary engines. Meanwhile, the fleet consists about over 20 aircraft, a part of it is in airworthy condition and a part is under restoration or waiting for this.

In case you are bored at a Sunday afternoon and if you like old photos, I can recommend the Flickr photostream of The Library of Congress’. This huge stream contains thousands of pictures from old newspapers but also includes great photo series from the war years in color! My previous post was about the B-25 Mitchell, I found in the archive a really a wonderful selection of pictures from the factory .. Who will say whether the famous Dutch b-25 Duke of Brabant Air Force is in one of these pictures.

After my last post about the absence of the Catalina from the Dutch airspace, I fear to also add the B-25 Mitchell on this list of “missing” aircraft. I’m talking about the B-25 of the Royal Air Force historical flight, or did he go again to the Duke of Brabant Air Force (DBAF)?

Consolidated PBY-5A “Catalina” gemist in 2011
