P-51 Cadillac of the skies

In Steven Spielbergs “Empire of the Sun” the young Christian Bale spoke the legendary words: “P-51 Cadillac of the skies!” This was after an appearance of a Mustang with its beautiful sound and slow motion fly-by, causing goosebumps to any enthausiast. The Mustang used in this movie is the P-51D. Of this version over 8000 units where built, making the D the most built and best known version of this airplane. The earlier versions of this plane have a slightly different cockpit, tail and nose. With some imagination, it looks a bit like the Curtiss P-40. This is not surprising because the story of the Mustang began when a British purchasing commission in 1940 was eagerly looking for a supplement to the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. They turned to North American Aviation factory, which built a prototype within 120 days. Below are some pictures from this plant where also the legendary B-25 was Made.

Assignments soon followed. Not only the RAF where customers, the U.S. military needed a new reconnaissance plane that could serve as both ground and air attack fighter. Meanwhile in Britain engineers at Rolls-Royce installed their Rolls-Royce Merlin in which a legendary combination was born. This engine was the perfect combination with the laminar wing profile. The plane consumed in comparison to other aircraft relatively little fuel and had a large fuel capacity. This made it perfect as a fighter escort for long-range bombing of Japan and Germany.
